How Many Make-Ups Do I Give?

Patti Komara of Patti’s All-American and Tumblebear Connection is an expert in the gymnastics industry.  There are many similarities between gymnastics gyms and music and dance studios, so I wanted to share her blog post with your regarding Make-Up classes.  I know this is a touchy subject for all studio owners, but I love Patti’s perception.  Enjoy!

How Many Make-Ups Do I Give?

Patti-KomaraSounds like a game you used to play in grade school-right? Actually it is a game we play as gym owners. But friends, at $18-$28 a lesson these days, this is no game. I used to give unlimited make-ups. Then, I thought it was too much to handle in the office and people were taking advantage of it, so I went to one make-up per month. Well, I’m back to unlimited make-ups and here’s why. These days more than ever it seems our customers have their kids in so many activities; they are oftentimes gone from home every night. They are so busy; they have their kids in everything.  You know how that Mom comes to the counter asking for another make-up, because her daughter had the flu and now she has opening day of softball. You can’t be so stringent with your rules that you throw your customers (and their money) away. Make it easy for them to do business with you. Make them want to like you. Bend over backwards for them. (Easy for us–we’re gymnasts…and smart ones at that!) I don’t use the term, “unlimited make-ups”, but if they miss more than one class and they call and ask us, we say, “Oh, Mrs. Johnson, of course we can schedule Sydney for that missed class. You know we’ll take care of you!” This is the time of year kids really miss a lot of classes due to spring sports. If you want them at the softball field singing your praises to other parents, it’s best to please them now.
